Module 2: Digital Story
Digital Storytelling
As it was my responsibility to create a digital story, I had no clue where I should start. Reading about what a good digital story looks like, given the resources under module two, it specified that digital storytelling should be broken down into the simplest form and that I should be cautious in regards to the amount of words being overused. I read in the article, The Science of Storytelling, that the human brain becomes much more active when a story is being told. A good story allows others to have emotions implanted in their heads, which allows connections between others. As it says in the article, The Art of Digital Storytelling, it mentioned that a good, or even great, stories are the ones told personally. A story should not be told about someone else, but rather, it should include a setting, details, and a personal experience.
As I was searching and trying to establish a solid idea that was intentional and interesting for my audience, I read that it is extremely important to establish emotion in a digital story. The way a story comes across to an audience is everything. It depends on the emotion and how personal my story is; it can’t be boring yet it must have a point to it. As I continued to ponder after reading what importance a digital story has on an audience, I briefly looked at the tattoo on my wrist. Then it hit me, I have my aunts passing date on my wrist, so I can write about my Aunt Sherri! She was like a second mother to me, so that was a way that I could make it personal.
This story was difficult to tell because it is a personal story. I often get emotional talking about her, but I learned that that was what makes a good story. Not to make people feel sorry for my loss, but to relate to those who have lost somebody close to them; to let them know that they are not alone.
I found that including an Illinois Teaching Standard was extremely difficult. I was worried that by incorporating a teaching standard it would take away from the personal story I was going to tell. However, as I began the process of speaking my story, it was a lot easier to incorporate a teaching standard than what I originally thought.
As for putting the digital story together, I found it difficult to put things together in a timely fashion. I had a real challenge trying to figure out what to put where and how to time my video in an appropriate manner. However, I learned that the final outcome is much worth the frustration of putting a personal video together.
